How to start programming in python? (Installation guide for non-programmers)

Installation procedure

  1. Download and install latest Anaconda from website. Go to https://www.anaconda.com/
    %%installed Python 3.10.6
  2. Open Anaconda prompt, then type the following command:
    conda update –all
  3. Create conda environment. Reference: https://docs.conda.io/projects/conda/en/latest/user-guide/tasks/manage-environments.html
    conda create –name myenv %%myenv is the name of environment
    conda activate myenv %%to activate the specified environment
    conda deactivate %%to deactivate an active environment
  4. Install Jupyter Lab
    pip install jupyterlab

Once installed, to access and work on the environment, follow the instruction below:

  1. Open Anaconda prompt.
  2. Activate the environment. Type the following command:
    conda activate myenv
  3. Open Jupyter Lab. Type the following command:
    jupyterlab
  4. The default browser will open where you can access the created environment in Jupyter Lab.

To install Python packages in the environment, you can use the anaconda command prompt or use the jupyterlab/jupyternotebook to install the packages.
%%put exclamation mark (!) at the beginning (ex. !pip) if you are installing the package in jupyterlab.

These are some of the packages I’m using video analysis:
pip install numpy %%numpy-1.23.3
pip install opencv-python %%opencv-python-4.6.0.66
pip install matplotlib %%matplotlib-3.6.1
pip install scipy %%scipy-1.9.2
pip install seaborn %%pandas-1.5.0 seaborn-0.12.0
